Degree Programmes

The Department of History and Social Sciences offers the following degree programmes Joint Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Secondary Education and Master of Education:

A joint bachelor's degree is aimed at school leavers with a higher education entrance qualification or potential students who have completed such a qualification. A Bachelor's degree normally takes six semesters to complete.

The Joint Bachelor of Arts allows students to study two subjects in parallel with equal weighting. The Joint Bachelor of Arts is a first degree, after which students can either enter the world of work or gain a further qualification by following an appropriate Master's programme. The following subjects can be studied (taught in German)

Subject 1:

German Studies

History

Philosophy

Political Science

Sociology

Subject 2:

German Studies

History

Philosophy

Political Science

Sociology

Computer Science

Business Administration and Economics

The Joint Bachelor of Arts is a first academic degree with professional qualification. On the one hand, the combination of two subjects ensures a unique breadth and diversity within the undergraduate education, which leads to disciplinary specialisation in a subsequent Master's programme. On the other hand, as a single-subject programme, it offers greater flexibility by giving graduates the opportunity to choose their subject for the Master's programme after having acquired scientific knowledge in two disciplines.

In addition, the programme provides students with an early introduction to interdisciplinary issues. The educational objectives of this programme are a basic introduction to rational and scientific thinking, reasoning and working on the basis of a solid scientific training in two disciplines. An optional area also provides key professional skills and interdisciplinary insights.

A Bachelor’s degree offers a strong foundation in academic and scientific principles and serves as an initial professional qualification. Upon completing a Bachelor’s programme, graduates can either begin their careers or continue their education by enrolling in a suitable Master’s programme.

The Department of History and Social Sciences offers the following Bachelor of Arts programmes (taught in German):

History with a Focus on Modern History

Political Science

Sociology

Course documents Bachelor of Arts (regulations, study and examination plans, module handbook)

To gain admission to a Master’s programme, applicants must hold a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in the same subject from TU Darmstadt or an equivalent qualification. The Master’s programme offers advanced academic specialisation, building on the foundational knowledge acquired during the Bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of the programme results in a second academic degree. Master’s programmes can have either a research-oriented or an application-focused approach. A Master’s degree also qualifies graduates to pursue doctoral studies.

The Department of History and Social Sciences offers the following Bachelor of Arts programmes (taught in German):

Applied Linguistics

Data and Discourse Studies (English taught)

History

Governance and Public Policy

International Studies/Peace and Conflict Research

Linguistic and Literary Computing (bilingual German/English)

Philosophy

Political Theory

Sociology

Technology and Philosophy

Course documents Master of Arts (regulations, study and examination plans, module handbook)

The programme combines the study of two subjects taught at secondary schools, which can be freely combined. Additionally, a third subject may be chosen as a supplementary subject (see details below). The two main subjects are complemented by studies in foundational sciences, including pedagogy, psychology, sociology, and political science.

A distinctive feature of the Teaching at Secondary Schools programme at TU Darmstadt is its MINT Profile. This unique approach allows students to explore humanities and social sciences subjects from a technical and scientific perspective. It equips students with interdisciplinary scientific and technical skills, which are particularly valuable for conducting complex, cross-disciplinary teaching projects.

The Department of History and Social Sciences offers the following subjects (taught in German):

Philosophy/Ethics

Politics and Economics

Teaching at Vocational Schools: Bachelor + Master of Education

The teaching profession at vocational schools is particularly diverse. As a vocational school teacher, you will work with young adults at various levels of qualification, including vocational preparation, vocational qualification, study qualification, and continuing vocational training programmes.

In the teacher training programme for vocational schools, you will study a vocational specialisation, earning a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), alongside a general teaching subject, which is completed with a Master of Education (M.Ed.). You can freely choose the general teaching subject from the offerings at TU Darmstadt. Additionally, a third subject can be studied (see “Supplementary Courses in Teaching” below). The combination of the Bachelor and Master of Education is equivalent to the First State Examination and qualifies you for the preparatory teaching service (Referendariat).

The following subjects are offered by the Department of History and Social Sciences (taught in German):
