Degree Programmes

The Department of History and Social Sciences offers the following degree programs: Joint Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Teacher Training at Secondary Schools and Master of Education:

A Joint-Bachelor's qualification is aimed at school leavers with a higher education entrance qualification or to potential students who have completed such a qualification. Studying for a Bachelor's degree typically takes six semesters.

The degree programme Joint Bachelor of Arts allows two subjects to be studied side by side with equal weighting. The Joint Bachelor of Arts is a first degree, after which students can either enter the world of work or gain a further qualification by following an appropriate Master's programme. Following subjects can be studied (German taught):

Subject 1:

Digital Philology

German Studies

History

Philosophy

Political Science

Sociology

Subject 2:

Digital Philology

German Studies

History

Philosophy

Political Science

Sociology

Computer Science

Sports Science

Business Administration and Economics

The Joint Bachelor of Arts is a first academic degree with professional qualification. The combination of two subjects ensures on the one hand a unique broadness and variety within the basic education, which leads into a disciplinary specialization in a following master-program. On the other hand, it provides a greater flexibility as an one-subject-program by giving graduates the opportunity, to make their subject choice for the master-program after gaining scientific knowledge in two disciplines.

In addition, the program allows students an early introduction into interdisciplinary questions. The educational objectives in this field of study are a basic introduction to rational and scientific thinking, argumentation and working on the basis of a solid scientific training in two disciplines. An optional area provides also profession-relevant key competencies and interdisciplinary insights.

To be accepted onto a Master's programme, it is an admission requirement to hold a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree on the same study path at TU Darmstadt or an equivalent qualification.

Providing greater academic depth, the Master's programme builds on the first stage with successful completion resulting in a second degree. A Master's programme may be research-based or applied. A Master's degree qualifies the holder to begin studying for a doctorate and is the equivalent of the (previous) Diplom and Magister Artium qualifications.

The following Master of Arts programmes are offered at Department of History and Social Sciences:

Applied Linguistics

Data and Discourse Studies (English taught)

Governance and Public Policy

International Studies/Peace and Conflict Research

The programme combines the study two subjects taught at secondary schools, which you can freely combine with each other. A third subject can be chosen as a supplementary subject (see this page below).

The two prinicpal subjects are framed by the study of basic sciences in pegagoy, psychology, sociology and political science.

The special feature of the Teaching at Secondary Schools programme at TU Darmstadt is its MINT Profile which offers the unique opportunity to view subjects in the humanities and social sciences from a technical/scientific perspective. This helps you to acquire interdisciplinary scientific and technical skills, something very useful for interdisciplinary teaching projects.

Practical phases during the courseenable you to gain initial experience in teaching and to develop your own teaching personality. In addition to these practical phases, two internships must be completed: an orientation internship in the field of pedagogical work with children and adolescents (which should be completed as far as possible before the start of your studies) and a company internship in the industrial service sector.

The standard length of the programme is nine semesters. It finishes with the First State Examination, the organisation of which is with the “Hessische Lehrkräfteakademie”.

Teaching at Vocational Schools = Bachelor + Master of Education

The teaching profession at vocational schools is particularly characterised by its diversity. As a teacher at vocational schools, you will work with young adults at different levels of qualification, i.e. in vocational preparation, vocational qualification and study qualification programmes, as well as within the framework of continuing vocational training programmes.

In the teacher training course at vocational schools, you study a vocational specialisation with the degree Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) plus a general teaching subject with the degree Master of Education (M.Ed.) which you can freely choose from the range of subjects on offer at TU Darmstadt. Additionally, a third subject can be studied (see “Supplementary Courses in Teaching” on this page below). Bachelor AND Master of Education in combination are equivalent to the First State Examination and entitle to the preparatory teaching service (Referendariat).

The training always includes the study of educational and social sciences. Several integrated practical phases give you the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in your future field of school activity and to develop your teaching skills.

Please note: For admission into the Bachelor of Education programme, a previously gained practical professional/vocational and work experience in the chosen field with a duration of at least 52 weeks is obligatory.
