Mobility Programmes for Students

Studying abroad not only opens up new academic perspectives, but also gives you the chance to experience another country and its culture. You will gain unique experience, broaden your horizons, make international contacts and improve your language skills. Studying abroad is not only personally enriching, it is also seen by many employers as a valuable additional qualification in an era of globalisation.

All students enrolled in the Department of Social Sciences and History are eligible to apply to study abroad. They can choose from exchange opportunities in the following regions Europe (ERASMUS+ programme), North America, Australia and New Zealand, South America and Asia.

The online application for the 2nd application round (only summer semester 2026, only Erasmus+ country section) is available from 01.05.2025 (00:00) – 31.05.2025 (23:59).

Application portal & information

The application procedure:

Complete the online application in the move-on application portal.

The online application form is available from 01.05.2025 (00:00) – 31.05.2025 (23:59).

If you have not already done so, please be sure to set up your student e-mail address via the IDM portal before applying online by either activating the student mailbox or entering a forwarding address. Please note that there should be at least one week between the activation of the student e-mail and the online application, as the systems are not updated daily.

The application in move-on contains the following documents:

  • Letter of motivation
  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
  • Current transcript of records (“Results” from TUCaN)
  • Language certificate
  • Overview of planned study projects abroad

Important: Send your application!

Please ensure that you have completed all mandatory fields and uploaded the correct application documents. You can submit your application when all sections of the menu have a green tick. No changes can be made to your application once it has been submitted. So only submit your application if you are sure you want to submit it exactly as it is! Only applications that are complete, accurate and submitted by the deadline will be considered.

  • Find out about exchange opportunities on our website and on the website of the International Relations & Mobility Department.
  • Before submitting your application, have a counselling interview with the contact person at your institute (e.g. during office hours). Please refer to the websites of the respective partner universities for further information on exchange programmes.
  • Complete the online application in the move-on application portal.
  • The online application form is available from 15 October 2024 to 30 November 2024.

Notes:

  • You should plan your study abroad at least one year in advance. Applications for study abroad in the academic year 2026/2027 will be accepted in autumn 2025. The application deadline is 30 November 2025.
  • Even if you are planning to study abroad in summer term 2027, your application deadline is autumn 2025.
  • Foreign languages: Requirements and certificates:
    • Please refer to the website of the partner university (or placement partner) for the language requirement(s).
    • For some partner universities the language requirements are a recommendation, for others they are a requirement and the submission of appropriate language certificates is mandatory.
    • In most cases, a certificate from the Language Centre of the TU Darmstadt is sufficient.
    • Please make an appointment at the Language Centre well in advance. If you already have a language certificate, please ensure that it is up to date (i.e. not older than two years).
    • Your school leaving certificate is not sufficient proof of your language skills!
  • The recommendation for the allocation of exchange places is made by the Institutes of Department 2.
  • The selection criteria are academic performance, language skills, study plans and personal suitability.
  • Once the Institutes have made a selection, these decisions are forwarded to the International Relations & Mobility Department for further processing. If you are selected to go abroad, you will receive an e-mail asking you to accept the offer (declaration of acceptance).
  • Once you have accepted, you will be nominated at the partner university.
  • The final allocation of a place is subject to the reservation of the partner university.

  • Application documents (letter of motivation, plans for study abroad)
