Mobility Programmes for Students

Studying abroad offers you many opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills. In addition to the course content, you will get to know a different country and culture, gain new impressions, meet new people and learn a new language. In addition, in an increasingly internationalised world, many employers value a period of study abroad as an additional qualification.

All students enrolled in the Department of Social Sciences and History are eligible to apply to study abroad. They can choose from exchange opportunities in the following regions Europe (ERASMUS+ programme), North America, Australia and New Zealand, South America and Asia.

Region Erasmus+

Note: The online application for the 2nd application round (summer semester 2025, Erasmus+ region only) will be available from 1 May 2024 to 31 May 2024.

The application can only be made for a stay in Europe through Erasmus+ in the summer term 2025. Further Information

Application process:

  • Complete the online application on the application portal.
  • The online application form will be available from 1 May 2024 until 31 May 2024.

The application contains the following documents:

  • Application from MoveOn
  • Achievement summary
  • Language Certificate
  • Letter of motivation and description of study project

Send the application documents as a single PDF file by e-mail to the contact person at your institute.

Please note Applications will only be accepted at the institutes of the Department of History and Social Sciences during the current application period.

  • Consult the contact person at your institute (e.g. during office hours) before submitting your application. For further information on exchange studies, please visit the websites of the individual institutes.
  • Fill in the online application form on the application portal.
  • The online application form will be available from 15 October 2024 until 30 November 2024.
  • If you have not already done so, please be sure to configure your student email through the IDM portal before applying online by either activating the student mailbox or entering a forwarding address. Note: There should be at least one week between the activation of the student mailbox and the online application, as the systems are not updated daily.
  • The application contains the following documents:

    • Language certificate
    • Letter of motivation and description of study project

Notes:

  • You should plan your study abroad at least one year in advance. Applications for study abroad in the academic year 2025/2026 will be accepted in autumn 2024. The closing date for applications is 30 November 2024.
  • Even if you plan to study abroad in the summer term of 2026, you must apply in autumn 2024.
  • Foreign languages: Requirements and certificates:
    • Please refer to the website of the partner university (or placement partner) for the language requirement(s).
    • For some partner universities the language requirements are a recommendation, for others they are a requirement and the submission of appropriate language certificates is mandatory.
    • In most cases, a certificate from the Language Centre of the TU Darmstadt is sufficient.
    • Please make an appointment at the Language Centre well in advance. If you already have a language certificate, please ensure that it is current (i.e. not older than two years).
    • Your school leaving certificate is not sufficient proof of your language skills!

Once you have submitted all your documents, the institutes and the department will decide whether to select you for a placement at one of our partner universities. Selection is based on academic performance, language ability, study plan and personal suitability. If you have any questions about the selection process, please contact your institute.

Once the department has made its selections, these decisions will be forwarded to the Office of International Relations and Mobility for further discussion. If you are selected for a study abroad programme, you will receive an email inviting you to accept your place (Letter of Acceptance).

Once you have accepted your place, you will be nominated at the partner university.
